Six Month Check Up: 2013 Construction Trends Thus Far
As hard as it is to believe, 2013 is already officially 50% over. The first half of this year has flown by, and business in general has been on a positive upswing. In just the 6 months leading up to today, 90 Degree Construction has already worked on a wine bar buildout, a sporting goods store buildout, and a fashion boutique buildout. We’re happy to report that our clients’ businesses all seem to be doing well. And their successes seem to be indicative of the business world in general. That being said, here are the top 3 trends we’re seeing in the construction industry (and more broadly in the business sector) this year.
- Struggling markets are on the up and up. Sales in the retail and restaurant markets are growing at a steady pace and commercial construction space is steadily being absorbed. Thanks to the positive direction of sales, retailers are actively pursuing new commercial construction space. Overall, confidence is high.
- Businesses are going green. As many builders are getting into the act of conservation, they’re focusing on materials that are reclaimed, repurposed and upcycled. Additionally, contractors are dabbling in dual plumbing systems, chiller boiler systems, and recycled/sustainable insulation.
- Value shopping is all the rage. Even though the market is well on its way to bouncing back, today’s savvy shoppers are far from forgetting recent struggles. The 2013 consumer is still a big fan of value stores like TJ Maxx and Marshalls, as well as other businesses that provide the thrill of a hunt. As this trend continues, shopping center construction and retail build outs will be reflective of this store style.
All in all, we’re encouraged by the growth we’re seeing. The economy is strengthening; retail sales are growing; and the commercial construction industry is ramping up. Hopefully the next 6 months will be every bit as prosperous as we predict it will be.
